The Monster 5 For Friday – Works Edition (Volume 14)

This week, the NFL season kicks off, and as anyone who prepped for a fantasy draft can tell you, this off-season brought some roster changes that might take some getting used to. Whether it’s seeing LT in a Jets jersey, Donovan McNabb in the Redskins backfield or Brandon Marshall going deep for the Dolphins, we’re reminded of the huge impact one’s employer has in shaping a personal brand. Especially if you’re playing for Al Davis. Monday is Labor Day, and as you gas up the grills and grid for the gridiron (and, hopefully, put away those white shoes), here are this week’s top 5 stories from the world of work you might have missed:

At last week’s TalentNet Live event, I decided to do something that seemed antithetical to my usual presence at these conferences and confabs. I stopped Tweeting and started listening. And then a funny thing happened: by closing my computer, I opened my mind. Rather than worry about concentrating on fitting the content of the presentations into 140 characters, I could concentrate on how they fit into the bigger picture. Here’s what I learned:

For employers, this has created a supreme need to keep a pipeline of talent flowing and – over time – companies have wised up to the fact that internships are an excellent way to discover and audition entry-level hires. That said, how do you actually run one? Guest Post by Emily Bennington.

The Monster 5 For Friday – Works Edition (Volume 13)

If you turned on the TV this week, you probably already know that the Social Network Movie began its marketing blitz in earnest, and we have to admit, we’re pretty excited. We’ll have to wait until October to see if the reviews match the buzz, but in the meantime, these top 5 “must read” posts from the world of work are definitely worth the price of admission:

The Monster 5 For Friday- Works Edition (Volume 12)

The Monster 5 For Friday- Works Edition (Volume 12)

The headlines this week proved the central tenet of employee relations: when it comes to rules, even the most minor infractions can carry major consequences. From an obscure technicality costing Zach Johnson a potential PGA championship to the continued fall out at HP over a falsified expense report to Ronnie’s nationally publicized arrest over unpaid parking tickets at the Jersey Shore, we were reminded it might not be such a bad idea to dust off that employee handbook, after all. While these stories dominated the mainstream news this week, here are the 5 “must read” from the world of HR and recruiting you might have missed:
