The Monster 5 For Friday – Works Edition (Volume 10)

avatar Posted by

Welcome to this week’s edition of the Monster 5 For Friday, our weekly spotlight of the 5 articles we consider “must reads” for recruiting and talent professionals.

The news this week reminded us that retention matters.  Whether losses involved terminations, (Bristol Palin calling off her wedding), resignations (Google’s long overdue abandonment of Wave) or natural attrition (Brett Favre’s annual “retirement”), the headlines proved that turnover has serious consequences.

With A-Rod rewarding the Yankees’ concerted efforts to keep him in pinstripes by blasting his 600th homer, though, it’s nice to know that even long tenured employees still have something to offer.  Of course, that’s little consolation if you’re a Vikings fan.

While these stories dominated the mainstream press, here are 5 stories from the world of work you might have missed:

The Monster 5 For Friday (7.31.10-8.6.10)

5. The Art Of Being Subtle When it comes to subtlety, HR Bartender’s Sharlyn Lauby demonstrates, there are some simple strategies to ensure that even when using an indirect approach, the intended message hits its mark.

4. The Art of Saying No Turning someone down is difficult and unpleasant, Mark Stelzer points out, but it’s often unavoidable.  Some great advice on how to say ‘no’ without having to say you’re sorry (hint: subtlety counts.  See above).

3. The Secret World Of Rules Being direct has its advantages, too.  “There is a long list of invisible, but expected, behaviors in society,” Deidre Honner writes in this Women of HR post, but when it comes to HR, unwritten rules can have unwelcome consequences.

2. Ducks in A Row: A Triple A Culture Is One of the Worst In this post from the MAPping Company Success Blog, Miki Saxon proves that when it comes to corporate culture, one of the most toxic things a company can do is nothing at all.

1. The Unintended Consequences of Stupid HR Policies Not all degrees are created equal, but you wouldn’t know that from reading job descriptions.  As Charlie Judy argues in this post from HR Fishbowl, the only thing requiring an advanced degree guarantees is that organizations are missing out on a huge pool of top talent.
