The Monster 5 For Friday – Works Edition (Volume 13)

avatar Posted by

If you turned on the TV this week, you probably already know that the Social Network Movie began its marketing blitz in earnest, and we have to admit, we’re pretty excited.  But, like a candidate whose mediocre soft skills fail to live up to the promise of their impeccable resumes, HR and recruiting professionals know that sometimes, sneak previews can be deceiving.

We’ll have to wait until October to see if the reviews match the buzz, but in the meantime, these top 5 “must read” posts from the world of work are definitely worth the price of admission:

The Monster 5 For Friday (8.21.10-8.27.10)

5. Motivating Without Money Sure, compensation’s important for attracting top talent, but when it comes to retention and engagement, as this post from Patty Azzarello shows, the most effective methods for employee motivation aren’t monetary.

4. The Social Journey Social recruiting has obvious allure, writes Michael Long (aka the Red Recruiter).  Turning that instant attraction into a long term, meaningful relationship, however, takes serious commitment.

3. The Great Work Life Balance Hoax Employer branding and recruitment advertising often highlights “work-life balance,” but in an age of increased connectivity and headcount, this concept may be exposed as just another corporate construct, argues Christine Livingston.  From A Different Kind of Work Blog.

2. How engaging are engaged employees? A Communicator’s View blogger Mark Schumann goes crowd sourcing with this straight forward question; the key conclusions he draws, however, are anything but.

1. Is the HR Online Community A Clique If you’re reading this, you probably already know the answer, argues Shauna Moerke (hint: a resounding yes).  But that’s not necessarily a bad thing.  Read this HR Minion post for a look at how the cool kids got there, and an interesting perspective on how to click with the clique.
