For those who have never attended SHRM (or even if you have), the sheer enormity of the event can be hard to grasp. It’s non-stop, wall-to-wall HR, which, for those of us who live and breathe this kind of thing, is pretty much heaven.
Thousands of practitioners and professionals, influencers and insiders crammed together inside the world’s largest convention space to hear keynotes by A-Listers (like Teen Wolf), fill swag bags and network at dozens of events running the gamut from Tweet Ups to Toby Keith. It’s HR with its hair down, and that doesn’t happen often. But when it does, it’s kind of cool.
Then, of course, there are the sessions, SHRM’s real raison d’etre, highlighting the topics, trends and thought leadership that really matter in our industry. Dozens of them, spread out in room after room after room, connected by a trail of broken heels and sore calves.
The scale and scope of SHRM for attendees is enormous and overwhelming, but fortunately, social media makes it easy for those who can’t make it to Vegas stay on top of the trends, topics and conversations that are meaningful and relevant to driving our profession – and our businesses – forward into the future.
Here are the top 10 bloggers we recommend following who are going to be bringing the frontlines of SHRM 11 online. Each is covering the event, and each possesses insider access, hands-on HR experience and reputation for engaging and insightful content.
In other words, when it comes to staying on top of this year’s SHRM Annual Conference, this list is the closest thing to a sure bet Vegas has ever seen:
10. Dr. Matthew Stollak (Blog: True Faith HR | Twitter: @akabruno)
A professor at St. Norbert College’s prestigious HR program, Stollak teaches a mandatory HR class and pretty much schools everyone with a knowledge of human capital issues that’s second to none. As his students or twitter followers know, however, the professor infuses his academic insights and observations with just enough personality and humor to make him one of the coolest teachers out there.
9. Craig Fisher (Blog: Fishdogs | Twitter: @fishdogs)
A recruiting and social media super star who’s been in the business for 15 years, this will be Fisher’s first ever SHRM conference. Check out this post, The Evolution of SHRM as a Community, to see why he’s psyched about his first SHRM event and you’ll know why we’re equally excited to follow his coverage.
8. Dawn Hrdlica-Burke (Blog: HR Insomniac | Twitter: @dawnhrrocks)
Hrdlica-Burke, a contributor to the popular recruiting blog Fistful of Talent, writer of the excellent “HR Insomniac” blog and mainstay of the HR online community, doesn’t just talk the talk as a blogger. She walks the walk every day as a practitioner and isn’t afraid to share her first hand experiences and lessons learned, providing practical advice and expertise.
7. Eric Winegardner (Blog: MonsterThinking | Twitter: @ewmonster)
While Winegardner’s a VP of Client Adoption here at Monster, those who follow Eric know that his inclusion is well deserved. Eric is one of the most involved, and well connected, professionals driving the evolution of the world of work. When there’s an HR party, Winegardner’s always in the center of the action. And not afraid to tweet about it, which is good news for the rest of us, since SHRM’s the biggest HR party out there.
6. Kevin Grossman (Blog: Marcom HRSay | Twitter: @kevinwgrossman)
Grossman has been named the #1 HR digital influencer and is perennially included in every round up of top thinkers in the talent management space, but he doesn’t believe in that sort of thing. It’s just that sort of humility that makes Grossman’s insights, and content, so engaging and approachable for HR pros of all stripes.
5. China Gorman (Blog: China Gorman | Twitter: @chinagorman)
Former SHRM COO and interim CEO China Gorman is a big deal, if you didn’t get that already. But for Gorman, moving HR, and the HR community, forward is what it’s all about, and she’s proactive in connecting and creating conversation with anyone who shares her passion for the business of people. Which is a very big deal, indeed.
4. Jennifer McClure (Blog: Unbridled Talent | Twitter: @cincyrecruiter)
McClure was part of the Monster Social Media Street Team at last year’s SHRM 10 conference, so we got a first-hand look at the incomparable @cincyrecruiter in action. Even so, we don’t know how she’s able to truly recreate the conference experience online, adding value 140 characters at a time, hundreds of times a day, while still leaving followers wanting more.
3. Maren Hogan (Blog: Marenated | Twitter: @marenhogan)
In the world of HR and Talent thought leadership, Hogan’s developed a reputation as someone who’s always in the know and knows everybody. At least it seems that way on social media. Her network alone is worth following, but her insightful content is what puts her coverage on this very short list.
2. Trish McFarlane (Blog: The HR Ringleader | Twitter: @trishmcFarlane)
The co-founder of the now ubiquitous HREvolution, McFarlane knows a thing or two about HR events; as a HR Business Partner at St. Louis’ Women’s and Children’s Hospital, she also knows a thing or two about workforce management. It’s a background that, when it comes to social, is a pretty killer combination.
1. Curtis Midkiff (Blog: SHRM | Twitter: @shrmsocmedguy)
Curtis Midkiff is the Manager of Social Media for SHRM, a role whose existence just a few years ago would be unthinkable, but whose outstanding community management and membership engagement makes the thought of SHRM without him equally inconceivable.
Also, don’t forget to follow @monster_works and @monsterww bringing you all the action from #SHRM11; follow #Booth866 for tweets from the rest of the Monster team, and don’t forget to stop on by and say hello.
Because ‘in real life’ still really matters.

Matt, you are much braver than I would be to limit it to 10. Way too many good bloggers in one place to limit it, but you picked 10 pretty damn good ones.

Like William Tincup, I too am wondering why L. Ruetterman didn’t make the cut. I get a lot of joy out of reading her blog! In fact, during SHRM it was the first thing I looked at each morning on rolling out of bed . . .
