Reinvent is defined in the following way: “to recast something familiar into a different form.” This is what is happening in the recruitment industry right now, and at the heart of this reinvention is social media. Social media is revolutionary, and it’s quickly transforming how we approach business and recruitment. The concept is simple but effective: giving people the power and tools to influence others.
Next week I have the privilege of speaking on this very topic at the 2011 Annual SHRM Conference in Las Vegas. Throughout the conference, I think you will be challenged to find one session (including mine) that doesn’t somehow touch on social media. Social media has changed the way we act, think, talk, work and has forever changed the way we communicate.
If you still think social media is a fad in recruitment, here are some predictions to ponder:
Some people may think these are exaggerations, but they’re already starting to happen and major changes continue to shape the recruitment landscape. If you haven’t read the book Groundswell, pick up a copy. It’s a must-read for any of us in the business world.
The premise of the book is simple but powerful – one person can influence thousands. One person shares information with their group of connections, who in turn share it with their group of connections and so on – creating a ripple effect or “groundswell”.
The reality is, companies no longer control what people say, hear or feel about their brands – candidates, customers and the general public control it. And through social media and viral marketing, anyone can create this groundswell of chatter about a company, product, event or even a job opportunity.
My session will look at a holistic approach to building a social strategy and will demonstrate the value social media can bring to recruiting. Throughout the session, you will see leading organizations that are harnessing the power of this groundswell to effectively reach and attract top talent.
We’ll also take a look at some pretty unique tools and techniques to help you build a more powerful social recruitment strategy for your organization. Given the right planning and strategy, social media can play a major role in building brand recognition and capturing the right talent – but you have to embrace it.
I read a quote recently in Ad Age that I think perfectly encapsulates social networking: “It’s about offering something of value, creating movements that build over time, engaging with passionate fans and giving them the tools to influence others.”
