The Veterans Talent Index: Tracking the Veteran Talent Gap

Connecting people with job opportunities is our mission at Monster. A big part of that mission is connecting employers with pools of largely untapped talent – like the slew of transitioning veteran talent making their way into our workforce today.

One way (among many) we’re helping employers that want to tap into veteran talent is through a new data-driven tool we just unveiled this morning.

The Veterans Talent Index is the first of an ongoing series of reports that will highlight both the requirements of today’s employers and the needs of transitioning service members, illuminating the gap that is responsible for the high unemployment rate rampant in today’s veteran population.

We’ll be tracking and analyzing this gap in a bi-annual Veterans Talent Index report, to be released on Memorial Day and Veterans Day. These reports will provide insight and recommendations to help both the transitioning service members and their employers.

This new Index comes at a critical time when there’s an influx of veterans entering the civilian workforce, providing a sizable opportunity for employers.

The goal with the Veterans Talent Index, ultimately, is to provide insight that hiring managers need to make better informed decisions when tapping into veteran talent.  On the flip side, we’re hoping to help ease the dual challenges that veterans face when seeking entry into the civilian workforce.

Not only are they entering a post-recessionary workforce, but they’re also challenged with translating their military skills into terms hiring managers will understand and value.

The good news among our initial findings is that employers appreciate the value that veterans can bring to the workforce, something that is particularly true among employers that have previously hired veteran talent.

The great news will hopefully come in the months ahead as we continue to monitor veterans’ job search conditions as well as the success and challenges employers face in recruiting them.
