Today, Monster is hosting our first Innovation Day in New York City to address the emerging concerns of the global skills gap in our workforce and its implications on recruitment. We have asked Robert Shiller, best-selling author and professor of economics at Yale University, to keynote the event with a talk on the global skills gap and matching theory titled “Rise of the Phoenix: Future of the Global Labor Market, Matching Talent with Opportunity.” We will have a team of Monster innovators on hand to demonstrate Monster’s advances in recruitment technology, especially in the world of semantic search and social networking. We would like to hear your thoughts on these topics and you can follow the conversation at #MWWInnovationDay.
We will share more insights from Innovation Day over the next few days. Stay tuned.

I think you’ll find that there isn’t a talent gap. Rather, there is an employer expectation gap meaning employers want to fill all their jobs with relatively low paid employees with 3-5 years experience who will come up to speed instantly. Meanwhile a large numbers of qualified and educated potential employees are not even considered for these positions because of their age, and (God forbid) they may need a month to 6 weeks to become fully contributing members of a company. As long as employers stick to their ridged hiring policies, they will encounter numerous “Talent Gaps.”

That’s a very interesting point. I know a lot of people say they believe in “hire the person, train for the skills,” but it seems many employers are reluctant to make that leap. What do you think drives that fear?
