Who Are Your Stars? That is the first question I ask when a boss has performance problems, is plagued by caustic conflict, or is losing good people at an alarming rate. I want know if the anointed stars enhance or undermine others’ performance and humanity. Unfortunately, too many bosses have such blind faith in solo superstars and unbridled competition that they hire egomaniacs and install pay and promotion systems that reward selfish creeps who don’t gave damn about their colleagues. Source of Hire: Making Sense of the Metrics

We sometimes get questions about the Source of Hire Study published recently by the Career XRoads colloquium. We thought we’d address a few points here.

For the past nine years, Gerry Crispin and his colleague Mark Mehler have issued this annual whitepaper, looking at how one group of corporations fills their open positions in the US and Canada. Among the outcomes, the report cites a significant gap in source of hire between Monster and its primary competitor in the “job board” category.
